Frequently Asked Questions:

I STILL HAVEN’T RECEIVED MY WEB PREFERENCES ACCESS GUIDE (including password and code)?
This has been sent to all families, however, please contact the Office to receive your password and code.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A SUBJECT DOESN’T RUN?
Every effort will be made to enable students to study their desired electives; however, in some instances, students may instead be offered one or more of their alternate selections. All subjects are offered subject to the following constraints:

- Student interest (ie. classes which do not attract sufficient student interest will not proceed
- Teacher availability (ie. some classes may not be able to proceed if a suitable teacher is not available)
- Timetabling constraints that might prevent students from studying certain combinations of subjects
- Resource limitations
- Some subjects have a quota restriction due to limitations on the resources required.

In these instances where subjects are not able to run, or places are limited - students will be either allocated their ‘reserve’ choice, or invited to re-choose alternative options.

ARE THERE PREREQUISITE SUBJECTS WITHIN THE YEAR 9-10 LEVELS?
LOTE, Dance, and Music are the only two subject areas where past learning is essential and as such a student would not be permitted to pick these in later years without completing earlier units in Japanese or Italian (or consideration of private lessons in the case of music).

IF I GET MY SUBJECT PREFERENCES IN FIRST, DOES THAT MEAN I WILL GET ALL MY CHOICES?
The College will make all attempts at allowing students to undertake their preferred subjects. Allocations will be decided upon availability, teacher-timetabling and other factors. This is why we ask students to also select reserve-options for their elective. Once the portal closes students who have not submitted preferences may have to wait to ascertain if space is still available in the electives of their choice.

DO I NEED A CAREERS APPOINTMENT BEFORE CHOOSING MY ELECTIVES?
If you have chosen a range of electives in areas you are skilled or passionate about it is not necessary to see the Careers staff.

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE ‘ATAR’?
It is wise to remember that an ATAR is simply an invitation for some university courses that lasts for 15 months. The higher the ranking, the broader the invitation to choose from amongst all the tertiary courses on offer. Our aim is to position our students to be able to pursue a tertiary education and to study the course of their choice. Thus the ATAR is only important to the extent that it provides entry to the course of choice - for those students seeking an ATAR-entry based course. It is also wise to remember that many courses use other alternative entry methods to determine entry as well as, or instead of, the ATAR.

I’D LIKE TO GO TO UNIVERSITY, AND NEED AN ATAR - WHICH STREAM WOULD BE BEST?
Select VCE or VCE Extend.

WHAT IF I’M STILL NOT SURE OF WHAT I’D LIKE TO DO BUT WANT TO KEEP THE OPTION OPEN OF GOING TO UNIVERSITY AND DECIDE LATER IN YEAR 11 OR 12?
Select VCE or VCE Extend.

WHAT HAPPENS IF A STUDENT IN YEAR 11 2023 DOESN'T WANT TO DO A SINGLE VCE SUBJECT AND JUST DO VCE VM LIKE IT WAS THE ‘OLD VCAL’?
Select VCE Vocational Major 1, which has all vocational subjects > especially if you’re seeking an apprenticeship. If you’re not sure you don’t want to do with an apprenticeship and still considering either indirect Uni entry, or TAFE (ie. for engineering, business, social service or design courses) - select Vocational Major 2 which is a mix of vocational and VCE subjects.

DOES A VCE VOCATIONAL MAJOR STUDENT STILL GET A CERTIFICATE FOR COMPLETING HIGH SCHOOL?
Yes - students in either VCE or VCE Vocational Major will receive a Year 12 Victorian Certificate of Education upon successful completion.
