In this unit, students begin to learn about dramatic elements and the elements involved in theatre composition. They participate in an ensemble performance of a scripted play and have the option to devise their own drama work. Students explore the use of production roles such as director, designer, lighting and sound, costume and makeup for their devised and scripted performances. Students will continue to extend their development of expressive skills to build belief in character, to show their understanding of a range of theatre styles. Students will have the opportunity to watch alive performance and analyse a range of elements that have been strategically selected by the director and artistic team. They will look at a range of performance and theatre styles and appropriately select and apply their understanding to workshop activities.

CREATING & MAKING

  • Within and across areas of specialisation, students create performances from a range of abstract ideas and/or stimuli, demonstrating development of a personal style. 
  • Individually and in groups, design and produce drama and/or theatre works influenced by the style of particular artists, cultures and performance styles. 
  • Incorporate a range of dramatic elements, theatre elements, performance skills and conventions in workshops and performance tasks 
  • Effectively use a range of production roles and theatre technologies to enhance a performance

RESPONDING & INTERPRETING

  • Critique a range of contemporary, traditional, stylistic, historical and cultural examples of drama and theatre works in the disciplines and forms in which they are working. 
  • Critically analyse, interpret and describe the stylistic, technical, expressive and aesthetic features of works created by a range of artists. 
  • Describe ways that their own and others’ drama and theatre works communicate and challenge ideas and meaning. 
  • Use appropriate drama and theatre terminology and refer to specific examples in the performance works being analysed. 

 

Assessment:

There will be a variety of tasks undertaken from the following: 

  • Ensemble creation and performance
  • Performance Analysis
  • History of Pre-Modern and Modern theatre style research task

Contributions to class discussions, participation in practical workshops and completion of class work will also be considered
