The Yarra Valley is home to a wide range of Agricultural and Horticultural industries. Using the school farm and other resources students investigate the techniques, issues, skills and key knowledge used by these industries in producing products for one of Australia's largest export sectors.  Students are introduced to the structure and function of plants and animals and how these are managed to produce primary and value-added products. This is accomplished through a range of hands on and theoretical activities and assessments.

 

Learning Standards:

Students will be able to:

  • Manage the nutritional and environmental needs of a plant to produce a crop.
  • Manage the nutritional and physiological needs of livestock.
  • Relate the structure and function of organisms to production standards.
  • Describe pests and diseases in production system and their control.
  • Describe the reproductive organs and reproductive methods of plants and animals.

 

Assessment:

There will be a variety of tasks undertaken from the following: 

  • Practical Skills
  • Assignment
  • Topic Tests
  • Practical Reports

Contributions to class discussions and completion of class work will also be considered.
