Year 11 Religious Education Option 2 - Catholic Ministry Stream

The program is designed for students who wish to grow in their faith and have the opportunity to witness it in liturgical, fundraising and ministry events. Full and enthusiastic participation in prayer and other ministry opportunities is an expectation of selecting this option. This program runs for both Semesters and will incorporate the Catholic Schools Youth Ministry International Program (CSYMI) as well as VCE Religion and Society Unit 2. Students studying CSYMI have opportunities to progress in leadership and spiritual development through the knowledge learnt in the classroom and the practice of youth ministry activities.  

CSYMI – Ministry and Spirituality

This unit will enable students to:

  • develop an understanding of a vision and rationale for youth spirituality and ministry
  • demonstrate an understanding of the core value and believes that inspire youth ministry
  • critically reflect on the role of scripture and prayer in developing youth spirituality and ministry
  • develop an understanding of the importance of community in youth spirituality and ministry
  • critically reflect on the depth of spirituality of youth today and how youth can be drawn into an experience of Christian spirituality.

Assessment: (Please read carefully)

  • Compulsory service in Ministry Lounge during some lunchtimes (rostered)
  • Completion of class notes
  • Planning, facilitating and evaluation of youth ministry projects
  • Completion of prayer journal
  • Participation in Prayer Group, Conversation Café and other Liturgical events

UNIT 2 – Religion & Society (Religion and Ethics)

In this unit students study in detail, various methods of ethical decision-making in at least two religious traditions and their related philosophical traditions. They explore ethical issues in societies where multiple worldviews coexist, in the light of these investigations.

Key Skills Achieved:

Define and use correctly, concepts associated with ethics and decision-making, know and explain moral viewpoints of religious traditions, summarise and explain the ethical perspectives and moral viewpoints regarding selected ethical issues.

Skills include the ability to:

  • define concepts used in ethical decision-making
  • explain a variety of methods of ethical decision-making and the theories that support them
  • identify a variety of principles derived from concepts and theories found in ethical methods
  • explain the role of various influences involved in the process of forming practical moral judgments
  • interpret, synthesise and apply primary and secondary source material.

Assessment:

  • Coursework

Please note these units will be taught concurrently throughout the year so both must be selected.

70% average in Year 10 Religious Education (either option)
