20th Century Australia
Students explore the causes, events, figures and circumstances of Australia’s involvement in World War Two. They also compare and contrast the Civil Rights Movements of both the United States and Australia. Students also explore pop cultural changes (arts, music, sport, media) in Australia during the 20th Century.
- Significant places where Australians fought and their perspectives and experiences in these places.
- Investigation of Australian society before (post-Great Depression) and during World War II (Role of Women), with a particular emphasis on the changes and continuities brought to the Australian home front and society
- Significance of World War II to Australia’s international relationships in the twentieth century, with particular reference to the Britain and the USA
- Causes and effects of the US civil rights movement and its influence on the civil rights movement of Australia’s Indigenous peoples
- Significance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, including Australia’s involvement in the development of the declaration
- Significance and impact of key civil rights activists (from both the US and Australia) in achieving change - politically, socially and culturally
