The Language and Literature course is designed to introduce students to the key skills of VCE English Language whilst also gaining an understanding of literary readings of significant cultural texts. that are typical of VCE Literature. This elective would be a viable option for those students who would like to try out alternatives to traditional English, without limiting their pathways; they could go on to study English, English Language of Literature in VCE. 

The study fosters and extends critical and creative thinking, aesthetic appreciation and creativity. This study also develops students’ ability to discuss, create and analyse texts, focusing on different interpretations, critical analysis and reflection.

This course builds on previously learnt principles of the core English curriculum and extends students to explore their love of reading, language and literature. Students studying Language & Literature become confident, articulate and critically aware readers and writers and develop a rich understanding of their world and their place within it. This study will build on the learning established through previous English studies in the modes of listening, speaking, reading, viewing and writing.

Assessment:

Assessment will be based on the completion of a variety of tasks including:

  • Class activities
  • Writing tasks
  • Class discussions and oral presentation 
  • Homework Tasks
  • Semester exam

  • Best suited to students who are capable in their English studies and wish to extend or broaden their VCE pathway.
