The Money Matters unit is a ‘real-life’ business and financial planning unit in which students will develop an understanding of the workings of the Australian economy and compare Australia’s performance in these areas with the rest of the world.  Students will also analyse the different marketing strategies that can be used to gain a competitive advantage in business, including the use of logos, slogans and the four P’s of marketing.  Further, they will explore how Australia’s legal system works and the burden of proof required in criminal and civil trials.  Finally, students will consider the importance of managing personal finances, saving, budgeting and investing to build wealth.  They will analyse the benefits and risks of investing in interest bearing accounts, Australian shares and property.  Examining the share market will allow students to select and track the share price movement of a parcel of Australian shares over a period of several weeks.  They will also develop practical skills such as how to prepare a personal budget and how to research, record, graph and evaluate share price movements on the Australian Stock Exchange.  From time-to-time students may also evaluate topical issues of the day such as online scams, superannuation, consumer debt, buy now pay later plans or taxation issues.  This unit will provide students with an excellent introduction to VCE commerce subjects offered in Year 11.
