May be included as a Scored Unit 3 & 4 Sequence for VCE pathway (& ATAR calculation)

The aim of this course is to provide pre-employment training and pathways in the engineering, manufacturing or related industries and accommodate entry into the wider engineering industry. Students specialise in the stream of Machining. This is a Scored VCE/VET program and, therefore, can be one of the primary 4 ATAR contributions with an exam completion within the unit 3-4 sequence. A 2-year course - the first year is delivered at MLMC and the second-year students usually attend Ringwood Trade Training Facility in Ringwood.

UNITS 1 & 2  - offered at MLMC

  • VU23481 - Apply occupational health and safety principles in an engineering environment
  • VU23475 - Safely use hand tools and hand held power tools for general engineering applications
  • VU23477 - Interpret and prepare basic two and three dimensional engineering drawings
  • VU23479 - Apply basic fabrication techniques
  • VU23476 - Report on the sectors and employment in the manufacturing, engineering and related industries
  • VU23478 - Perform basic machining

UNITS 3 & 4  - through an external RTO

Units offered for the Unit 3 & 4 are to be confirmed, and may include: 

  • Perform computations
  • Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices
  • Produce basic engineering sketches and drawings
  • Handle engineering materials
  • Apply 5S procedures
  • Produce basic engineering components and products using fabrication or machining.

Key Skills Achieved:

Activities incorporated include structured training delivery and unstructured Learning Activities are undertaken such as reading texts, locating information, writing reports, completing practical & theory assignments and projects. 

Assessment:

Certificate II in Engineering Studies 22632VIC is a competency-based course. For Units 1 & 2 assessment is achieved through the use of review questions, subject tests, and practical project work.

What credit will I receive toward my VCE or VCE VM?

  • VCE - Two Units at 1 & 2 for the first year and two VCE Units at 3 & 4 for the second year. Can be one of the 4 primary ATAR calculation of contributing subjects with an exam completion. 
  • VCE VM - You will be eligible for up to two credits towards your VCE VM for unit 1 and 2 and a further two credits for Units 3 and 4. 

Prerequisites: 

  • Students must complete Units 1 & 2 before undertaking Units 3 & 4.
  • Prior to commencement of this course students must undertake a pre-training review and a language, literacy and numeracy evaluation.  
  • An interest in engineering, design and hands on applications is desirable.
