Certificate II in Building and Construction- Carpentry (Pre-apprenticeship) is a nationally accredited course offering student’s training in the Building and Construction industry. The VET Building and Construction program enables students to partially complete Certificate II in Building and Construction. At the end of Units 3 & 4 Box Hill Institute offers a condensed GAP course so that students can complete the full pre-apprenticeship prior to the end of the year. 

Recommendation/Prerequisites: 

Students must complete Units 1 & 2 before undertaking Units 3 & 4.

UNITS 1 & 2

This subject can be selected by any Year 10 student. This program is embedded in the weekly timetable: 

  • CPCCWHS2001 - Apply WHS requirements, policies and procedures in the construction industry
  • VU23320 - Identify and handle carpentry tools and equipment
  • CPCCOM1015 - Carry out measurements and calculations
  • CPCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (white card)
  • CPCCOM1014 - Conduct workplace communication
  • VU23313 - Interpret and apply basic plans and drawings

UNITS 3 & 4 is conducted on Wednesdays from 1.15 – 5.00pm

  • VU23324 - Construct basic roof frame
  • CPCCCM2006 - Apply basic levelling procedures
  • VU23321 - Perform basic setting out 
  • VU23323 - Construct basic wall frame
  • VU23328 - Dismantle basic timber structures
  • VU23322 - Construct basic sub-floor

What credit will I receive toward my ATAR?

Students who receive a Unit 3 and 4 sequence for VCE VET Building and Construction will be eligible for an increment towards their ATAR (10% of the lowest study score of the primary four studies).

Pathways:

Once the student has fully completed units 1 & 2, 3 & 4, they can choose to complete a bridging course at Box Hill Institute in order to gain their full certificate.  VCAA only requires a Partial Completion for the purposes of VCE and VCE VM. 

Prerequisites/Requirements:

  • This course must be completed in a two-year sequence
  • Units 1 & 2 must be taken in Year 10 to enrol in Units 3 & 4 in Year 11 at MLMC
  • Units 1 & 2 is conducted in the weekly timetable, with Units 4 & 4 in the Wednesday VET block, 1:15 - 5:00pm.
