UNIT 3 – PRODUCING THEATRE
In this unit students develop an interpretation of a script through the three stages of the theatre production process: planning, development and presentation. Students specialise in two production roles, working collaboratively, creatively and imaginatively to realise the production of a script. They use knowledge developed during this process to analyse and evaluate the ways work in production roles can be used to interpret script excerpts previously unstudied. Students develop knowledge and apply elements of theatre composition, and safe and ethical working practices in the theatre. Key areas of focus include:
- Dramaturgy (& Context)
- Elements of Theatre Composition
- Theatrical Styles (& Conventions)
- Production Roles
- Theatre Technologies
Students attend a performance selected from the prescribed VCE Theatre Studies Unit 3 Playlist and analyse and evaluate the interpretation of the script in the performances.

Assessment:
- Outcome 1 – Interpreting a Script (60%)
Task 1 (45%) Applying all three stages of the production process through collaborative work in two production roles.
Task 2 (15%) Documentation of ongoing developmental contributions across production process in two or more of the following formats – Oral, Written, Visual, Multimedia
- Outcome 2 – Unseen Playscript (15%)
Creative interpretation of excerpts from a script and how these could be realised in a theatre production in any one or a combination of the following formats - an essay AND/OR responses to structured questions
- Outcome 3 – Analysing Theatre (25%)
Production analysis of a prescribed script performance in any one or a combination of the following formats - an analytical essay AND/OR responses to structured questions
UNIT 4 – PRESENTING AN INTERPRETATION

Task 1 (20%) Written report on dramaturgical decision-making for a prescribed monologue (essay and/or responses to structured questions)
Task 2 (10%) Oral Presentation for a prescribed monologue, including responding to question/s
- Outcome 2 – Monologue presentation (S or N)
- Outcome 3 – Analysing Theatre (25%)
Production analysis of acting & direction of a prescribed script performance (analytical essay AND/OR responses to structured questions)
VCAA ASSESSMENT – THE OVERALL STUDY SCORE WILL CONSIST OF:
- School Assessed Coursework for Units 3 & 4 will contribute 45%
- End of Year VCAA Examination will contribute 55%, including:
Monologue Examination – 25%
Written Examination – 30%
