The areas of study in Japanese comprise of prescribed themes and topics. Language content is suited to the level and scope of the themes and topics and includes grammar, kanji (characters), vocabulary, text types and writing styles. The prescribed themes for study in VCE Japanese Second Language are “the individual”, “Japanese-speaking communities” and “the world around us”.


UNIT 3

In this unit, students investigate the way Japanese speakers interpret and express ideas, and negotiate and persuade in Japanese through the study of three or more subtopics from the prescribed themes and topics. Students develop skills and knowledge to participate in a spoken exchange to resolve a personal issue; interpret information from texts and write responses; and create an extended original piece of personal, informative or imaginative writing. 

Learning Activities:

  • Traditions in the modern world (festivals, cultural events)
  • Japanese influences in daily life and the world
  • Living in Japan (daily life, homestay, country and city life)

Key Skills Achieved:

Reading and viewing, Writing, Listening, Speaking in the target language.

Assessment:

  • Written Responses to texts
  • Oral role play
  • Extended writing piece (personal, informative or imaginative writing)


UNIT 4

In this unit students investigate aspects of culture through the study of two or more subtopics from the prescribed themes and topics. Also, students identify and reflect on cultural products and practices that provide insights into the Japanese-speaking communities. Students develop skills and knowledge to participate in a spoken exchange sharing information, ideas and opinions; analyse information from various texts for use in a written response; and present information, concepts and ideas in evaluative or persuasive or writing on an issue.

  • Changing world (globalisation, identity, relationships)

Reading and viewing, Writing, Listening, Speaking in the target language.

Assessment:

  • Oral Interview
  • Extended written response using texts
  • Persuasive or evaluative writing piece



VCAA ASSESSMENT – THE OVERALL STUDY SCORE WILL CONSIST OF:

School Assessed Coursework - 50% 

End of year Examinations (oral examination and written examination) – 50%

Prerequisites:

The student must have satisfactory completion of Unit 1 and 2 Japanese.
