In Units 3 and 4 Revolutions students investigate the significant historical causes and consequences of political revolution. Revolutions are caused by the interplay of events, ideas, individuals and popular movements, and the interplay between the political, social, cultural, economic and environmental conditions. Their consequences have a profound effect on the political and social structures of the post-revolutionary society.


At MLMC the two revolutions studied are The French and Russian revolutions.


Semester 1

Area of Study 1: Causes of revolutions


Learning Standards:

  • What were the significant causes of revolution?
  • How did the actions of popular movements and particular individuals contribute to triggering a revolution?
  • To what extent did social tensions and ideological conflicts contribute to the outbreak of revolution?


Semester 2

Area of Study 2: Consequences of revolution


Learning Standards:

  • What were the consequences of revolution?
  • How did the new regime consolidate its power?
  • What were the experiences of those who lived through the revolution?
  • To what extent was society changed and revolutionary ideas achieved or compromised?


Assessment:

Unit 3 and 4:

Each of the following four assessment tasks must be completed over Units 3 and 4:

•   a historical inquiry

•   evaluation of historical sources

•   extended responses

•   an essay

Teachers may choose to select one or more assessment tasks for each outcome. The assessment tasks may be undertaken in any order.


VCAA ASSESSMENT – THE OVERALL STUDY SCORE WILL CONSIST OF:

Percentage contributions to the study score in VCE History Revolutions are as follows:

  • Unit 3 School-assessed Coursework: 25%
  • Unit 4 School-assessed Coursework: 25%
  • End-of-year examination: 50%

Recommendations:

It is recommended that the student have an overall average score of 65% in any English.
