Drama focuses on the creation and performance of characters, narratives and stories. Students draw on a range of content and use role and expressive skills to create, embody and present dramatic works. They analyse the development of their performances and explore the actor-audience relationship. Students develop an understanding of dramatic elements, stagecraft and theatrical conventions. They view and analyse performances by professional drama practitioners. Students must undertake Unit 3 prior to Unit 4.
UNIT 3 - Devised ensemble performance
This unit focuses on Eclectic drama from a diverse range of contemporary and/or cultural performance traditions. Eclectic performance styles are explored in the creation, development and presentation of an ensemble performance. Students use and manipulate dramatic elements, expressive skills and performance styles to enhance performance. They select production areas and conventions as appropriate to the performance. Students also document and evaluate stages involved in the creation, development and presentation of the ensemble performance.
Learning Activities:
Playmaking techniques; exploration and experimentation of character; improvisation; research tasks; documentation of process through a written journal. Students also go off-campus to view an eclectic professional production for analysis.
Key Skills Achieved:
Creating ensemble performance using dramatic elements, conventions, production areas and expressive skills in an eclectic style. Students will also be able to describe and analyse their own and others’ performances using Drama terminology.
Assessment:
UNIT 4 - Devised solo performance
This unit focuses on the use of stimulus material and resources from a variety of sources to create and develop character/s within a solo performance. Students complete two solo performances, one ‘mini solo’, and their final examination solo performance. For the mini solo performance, they develop practical skills of researching, creating, and presenting a solo performance. The second solo performance, they devise, rehearse and perform in response to a prescribed structure, to a panel of VCAA adjudicators. The solo performances are analysed and evaluated.

Exploration and experimentation with playmaking techniques and characterisation; creating a written script; improvisation; research; rehearsing; and refining.
Key Skills Achieved:
Create and present character in solo performance using skills developed in Unit 3, develop a script, document and evaluate processes using drama language
