Units 1 & 2 Technology - Product Design Textiles

Students gain an understanding of the product design process, the ability to generate multiple ideas to design problems, explore the properties of materials, examine methods of production and evaluate production and design activities.  Students learn by developing design folios, researching, drawing and safely producing products.

UNIT 1 Sustainable product redevelopment

Have you ever wondered how you could reuse an existing textile item that you no longer need? We will teach you how to redevelop existing products into a new garment. In this unit you will examine claims of sustainable practices by designers. Also, you will prepare a design folio containing a design brief, evaluation criteria, research, visualisations, design options, working drawings, a scheduled production plan, and an evaluation report on the finished product.

Learning Activities:

Students undertake design work including research, written design briefs and drawing.  Production practice which is relevant to either wood or textiles.

Key Skills Achieved:

Ability to respond creatively to a design problem, drawing skills and safe production practices. Ability to work well with others in a team.

Assessment:

Design folio, product and written examination.

UNIT 2 Collaborative design

Would you like to join a design team? Would you like to know how to design a garment using historical or contemporary design styles as inspiration? You can choose to research and be inspired by any of the following: Bauhaus, Art Deco, Memphis, Minimalism, Organic Design Style, Biomorphism, Oriental or Gothic. Alternatively, you may investigate music genres, sub-cultures, technological themes, specific designers, brands, or fashion houses. In this unit each student works in a design team to generate one design brief collaboratively from a scenario, based around a theme and contributes to the design, planning and production of a group product.
