The areas of study in Japanese are prescribed themes and topics. Language content is suited to the level and scope of the themes and topics includes grammar, kanji (characters), vocabulary, text types and writing styles. The prescribed themes for study in VCE Japanese Second Language are “the individual'', “Japanese-speaking communities” and “the world around us”.
UNIT 1
This unit students develop an understanding of the language and culture of Japanese-speaking communities. Students develop their skills and knowledge to establish and maintain a spoken interaction; read, listen to or view texts to summarise content and interpret information through written responses; and present information, concepts and ideas in writing for a specific audience and purpose.

UNIT 2
This unit will allow students to develop an understanding of aspects of language and culture through the study of three or more topics from the prescribed themes. Students develop their skills and knowledge to enable them to read, listen to and view texts and develop a suitable written response; analyse and use information from written, spoken or visual texts to produce an extended written response; and develop an oral presentation to explain information, ideas and concepts about a specific aspect of culture.

The student must have satisfactory completion of Year 10 Japanese.
Recommendations:
It is recommended that the student achieves at ‘Expected Level,’ and has an average score of 60% in the Semester 1 Year 10 LOTE examination.
